    October 23, 2014
Washington:  The Mexican film Echo of the Mountain, by filmmaker Nicolás Echeverría, on Wednesday (22) won the Grand Prize: Gold Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival.

The film tackles the life and work of Santos de la Torre, the only Mexican whose work is in the Louvre, France, at the exit of the French subway station, almost at the gates of the famous museum, and to the astonishment of walkers, this wall was made with two million beads, a news report on Prensa Latina news  Agency said.

The mural was a gift of former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo to his then French counterpart  Jacques Chirac; however, the artist was never paid for this work.

A press release from the organizers of the event, reports that this documentary was recognized for highlighting the culture and traditions that still exist in a globalized world.  According to the footage, De la Torre lives isolated and ignored in his country despite being the author of fabulous works reflecting the Mexican culture.

Echo of the Mountain tracks the Huichol artist in his pilgrimage to the sacred site of Wirikuta, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where he will ask permission from the gods to make a new illustrative mural of the history, mythology and religious practices of his people.

The film director is considered one of the best Mexican documentary makers for works such as "El memorial del 68", "Maximilian and Carlota", and "El niño Fidencio".  In addition, he received rave reviews for the realization of "Cabeza de Vaca" and "Vivir mata", among other works. (KH)
