Why zebras have black and white stripes is a question that has intrigued scientists and spectators for centuries. A research team led by the University of California, Davis, has now examined this riddle systematically. Their answer is published today, April 1, in the online journal Nature Communications.

Eighteenth Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization will be held in Colombo from 01st to 05th June 2014. The Meeting is held in Sri Lanka on the initiative of Dr Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development. This is the second time Sri Lanka is hosting the event, the first being in 2011.

The Sri Lanka Navy assisted in the repatriation of 21 Indian fishermen and 10 fishing trawlers on Sunday. They were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard Ship “Abheek” at the seas off Mannar. Sri Lanka Navy Inshore Patrol Craft were deployed for the humanitarian mission.
Two Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) ships, "Inazuma - 105" and "Umigiri - 158", arrived at the Port of Colombo on a goodwill and logistic visit on Tuesday (April 1). The ships are en route for counter piracy operation off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden. They were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on arrival.
