The Government of India has extended a financial assistance of Rs 600 million for the construction of 600 housing units in 25 villages of the Northern Province and 600 housing units in 25 villages of the Southern Province under the Semata Sevana Gramashakthi Model Village Project conducted by the Government Island wide. Accordingly, the construction of the said villages is being carried out at present.
Sri Lanka, being one of the countries which have ensured the right to information of the public, possesses the third best Right to Information Act in the world.Accordingly, the Government has focused its attention to declare the period from 21st to 28th September as the Information Week to make aware the public of using the right to information for the public welfare to coincide with the International Day of Right to Information which falls on 28th September while naming the year 2018 as 'Year of Public Awareness'.
The Sustainable Punyagrama Programme with temple as a centre point is being conducted by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, with the objective of implementing the concept of the village and the temple in a more realistic way and creating a village comprising of an economically sound community empowered with virtues.
It has been proposed to expand the Middle‑Income Housing Loan Scheme enabling the middle income earners of both the public and private sectors who purchase a house for the first time from the middle income housing projects to obtain a concessionary loan from the National Savings Bank.
Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Prime Minister in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, to take into consideration the age limits generally adopted by the Banks instead of the age limits that prevailed previously to apply for this loan scheme and also to enable to facilitate more beneficiaries to purchase houses from projects implemented by the private sector as well, was approved by the Cabinet.
Pertaining to this matter, as proposed by H.E. the President, it was also decided to lower the eligibility criteria relating to the monthly income level for this programme.
The first fire-fighting high speed craft produced in Sri Lanka to control the fires on boats and ships in the deep was launched at the Dikowita Fisheries Harbor under the State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi on Thursday (13th).The firefighting craft was completely made domestically by Solas Marine Lanka Pvt. Ltd.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Seoul and the Nations Trust Bank jointly conducted a series of five workshops on entrepreneurial education targeting Sri Lankan employees in the Republic of Korea, in Cheonan, Gimhae, Gimpo, Ulsan and Ansan regions from 11 to 19 August 2018.
The workshops comprised a specialized programme on entrepreneurial education launched by the Embassy in conjunction with its customary Diriya Maga Awareness Raising and Counseling Programme, to enhance knowledge of financial management and entrepreneurship among returning Sri Lankan employees in order to facilitate their smooth re-integration into the productive labour force of home country.
A minor earth tremor has been felt near Trincomalee bay early this morning (15), stated Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.According to the Bureau’s Director General Dr. Chandrawimal Siriwardena, the tremor measured between 3.5 and 3.8 on the Richter Scale.
SLINEX 2018, joint exercise between the navies of India and Sri Lanka concluded on a successful note in Trincomalee Thursday (13th September). The seven day exercise which comprised two phases, namely the Harbour and Sea Phase was participated by around 1,000 naval personnel from both countries. Meanwhile, the naval drill was joined by SLNS Sayurala, SLNS Samudura, SLNS Suranimila of the Sri Lanka Navy and INS Sumitra, INS Kirch, INS Cora Divh together with 02 Dornier air craft and a helicopter of the Indian Navy.
Director General of Government Information Attorney-at-Law Sudarshana Gunawardhane while refuting media reports said that the CID has had no plans to arrest the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunatane in connection with the allegations on protecting Navy Sampath.
