    Dutch tourist bookings rising

    The number of incoming tourists from The Netherlands travelling to Sri Lanka has begun to pick up, following the relaxation of the travel advisory by the Dutch Government last Friday, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs communique said. Since the recovery after the Easter Sunday bombings, Sri Lanka’s mission in The Netherlands has been lobbying the Dutch Government and recently successfully obtained a relaxing of the negative travel advisory against Sri Lanka.

    The Education Ministry said there is no further need to summon parents to assure security of schools.In a statement, the Education Ministry said it had taken this decision due to the Tri-forces, the Civil Defence Force and the Police taking maximum effort to ensure security for all schools inclusive of International Schools as well.It was reported that some school authorities had caused inconvenience to some parents by not allowing children who did not carry transparent bags and prevented children from entering school.

    The Met Department stated that rainfall of 100mm could occur in the South and Sabaragamuwa as well as in Kalutara district. The department added that this was the result of the South West monsoons across the country.National Building Research Organisation warned of landslides which could occur due to rainfall. The organisation advised the general public to be vigilant on the matter.

     

    Laws are to be urgently toughened to crack down on false news distribution and to curb hate speech in a bid to reduce the current spate of conflict aggravating public messaging, the Government Information Department announced yesterday. Cabinet approval has been granted for the revision of the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code enabling swift and stringent legal action to be taken against those who engage in false news distribution and hate speech.

    The sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Colombo, Galle and Hambanthota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60-65 kmph, the Department of Meteorology said. Issuing a warning, it said the other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph.

    The newly installed ‘Air Quality Observation Centres’ (AQOCs) in the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Head Office at Battaramulla, the Kandy Central Bus Stand and Biyagama around the Kelani River will be commissioned on Thursday. The CEA in a press statement said the atmospheric air quality would be constantly examined through these centres and that the public would be kept informed on the results daily.

    The Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry of Health has assured that there is no shortage of medical drugs in any hospital. Making a special statement Medical Supplies Division Director Dr. A.T. Sudarshana said that there is no shortage of essential drugs at present and measures have been taken to supply sufficient stocks of drugs.

    The Public Administration Ministry in a circular addressing security in the office premises has announced that female government officers should wear Saree/Osari as part of compulsory security measures.The circular which was by signed by Public Administration Secretary J.J. Rathnasiri notes that men would have to be clad in a shirt/trouser or the national dress.

    All government and private schools and education institutes will be regulated and monitored by the Education Ministry, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.He said that there is a need to regulate and monitor all government and private schools aiming at maintaining the standards of education. The proposed monitoring and regulating process will be carried out by a committee performed under the Education Ministry.

    The Minister made these observations while addressing the ceremony to present appointment letters to the Sri Lanka Teacher Service. Accordingly 592 Development Officers recruited under the graduate schemes in 2013, 2018 and 2019 received appointment letters at the ceremony held at the Ape Gama premises, Battaramulla yesterday.

    President Maithripala Sirisena has denied media reports claiming that he was informed of a possible terror plot during a meeting with senior police officers on April 08. Media reports have publish the statements made by the national intelligence chief, testifying before the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to look into and report on the Easter Sunday terror attacks which took place in the country on April 21.

    According to these reports the National Security Council had not convened a meeting since February 2019. However, issuing a statement today (30) the President’s Media Division said that the discussions taking place within the national security council over the past year were being unofficially published in the media and due to this reason steps were taken to establish the National Security Committee, composed of a different structure to the security council.
