    orowpothana Police yesterday arrested five including a management assistant who had allegedly maintained close contacts with suicide bomber Zahran Hashim. Preliminary police nvestigations have also found that the management assistant in question was attached to the Horowpothana Divisional Secretariat and he had conducted lectures to Muslim youth in two districts.

    Rs 134 million in 41 bank accounts belonging to the suspects, who are currently held in custody of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Terrorism Investigation Division over their alleged links to Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, have been suspended.Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara stated this addressing a media briefing held at the Ministry of Defense this evening (24).     A front page newspaper report in a national daily on Thursday (23) had claimed that a doctor connected to the Thowheed Jamaath had sterilized 4000 Sinhala Buddhist women during caesarean operations and that information has been received with evidence and investigations have commenced to arrest the doctor. The newspaper also claims that this doctor had carried out over 7000 surgeries. Commenting on this issue the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara categorically denied any such investigations being carried out by the CID or any other special Police teams. He also said that Police have not received any such complaints. He made these remarks at a press briefing held at the Media Centre in Kollupitiya, last evening (23).

    Attorney General Dappula de Livera PC has directed acting Inspector General of Police in writing to take disciplinary action through the National Police Commission against the Western Province Senior DIG, the STF Commandant and National Intelligence Chief for dereliction of duties. The AG handed over two letters containing his legal advice on the two interim reports of the special Presidential Committee to probe the Easter Sunday attacks to acting IGP Chandana Wickramaratne.

    The Ministry of Finance said the ration and other allowances paid to all the officers and other ranks in the Tri-Services have been increased by the government.Some of these allowances had not been increased for over the last 20 years.In the Budget - 2019, Finance Minister, Mangala Samaraweera had proposed to increase the Uniform allowance, Rental allowance, the good performance allowance and the Commando allowance of the Armed forces.

    It has been confirmed that Zahran Hashim, the alleged ringleader behind the Easter Day bomb attacks, has been killed in the attack at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo. This has been determined when comparing DNA samples of Zahran with samples of his daughter and his wife, stated the Government Analyst’s Department. It has been revealed that Zahran Hashim had been one of the two suicide bombers who attacked the Shangri-La Hotel on Easter Sunday (April 21).

    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday Madrasas would be placed under the purview of the Education Ministry. Following a meeting held yesterday at his office, the Prime Minister said the Education Ministry together with the Muslim Religious Affairs Ministry would regulate some of their activities. He said he discussed the matter with ministers representing the Muslim community and that they agreed to it.

    The Ministry of Defense has granted Kurunegala police permission to detain a translator at the parliament who was arrested over involvement with the National Thowheed Jamaath (NTJ). Accordingly, the suspect will be detained for a period of 90 days for purpose of interrogation, stated Police Media Spokesperson.

    Several web sites that came under a cyber attack earlier today have been restored, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) said. SLCERT said eleven websites with .lk or .com domains including the website of the Kuwaiti Embassy in Sri Lanka and had been subjected to a Cyber attack.
