Construction work on the 37-kilometre Kadawatha–Meerigama section, the first phase of the Central Expressway Project, has exceeded 53%, according to the Ministry of Transport and Highways.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena recently (07) inspected the ongoing construction work and reviewed the progress of the project.
Project engineers said the construction is expected to be fully completed by 2028. Plans are in place to increase construction progress to 65% by the end of this year and 95% by the end of 2027.
The Ministry stated that the project, which had been halted midway under the previous administration, is now being expedited under the present government with the necessary plans in place to complete it using domestic funds.
The Deputy Minister also inspected construction work at the Kadawatha System Interchange (KSI), which provides access to the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, Colombo Outer Circular Highway and Southern Expressway.
