Fuel Supply for Fisheries Sector to Be Managed Amid Middle East Tensions

The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources has stated that fuel stocks required for the fisheries sector will be carefully managed and supplied to the fishing community in light of the prevailing tensions in the Middle East.

Secretary to the Ministry, B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, made these remarks during a special media briefing held today (30) at the Government Information Department. He noted that specific guidelines have already been issued to ensure the smooth distribution of fuel.

According to the Secretary, nearly 5,000 multi-day fishing vessels and around 900 one-day fishing vessels using diesel are registered under the Ministry. He explained that a single multi-day fishing vessel requires approximately 8,000 litres of diesel per trip, which is supplied through the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

He further stated that operators of multi-day vessels are required to submit an online departure form prior to each യാത്ര, and based on the approved details by the area Fisheries Inspector, the required quantity of fuel will be issued.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that most one-day fishing vessels use kerosene, with about 35,000 such vessels currently registered. A small quantity of petrol is also required to start their engines, and accordingly, each individual will be provided with two litres of petrol per day. Required kerosene can be obtained from CPC-registered filling stations in the respective areas.

The Secretary also stated that if there are any issues related to fuel supply, information can be obtained by contacting the 24-hour hotline numbers 011-4323389 and 011-4341067.
