The Port of Galle Development Project aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s maritime economic potential while promoting the tourism industry, Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka said.
The Minister made these remarks while attending the Galle District Coordination Committee meeting held yesterday (12). He noted that the project plans to upgrade infrastructure at the fisheries harbour adjacent to the Galle Port, while also developing nearby areas of archaeological and historical value to enhance tourist attractions in the city.
According to the Minister, the development initiative is expected to generate both direct and indirect income opportunities, thereby improving the livelihoods of local communities. The project also includes the construction of a passenger jetty for tourists, improvements to customs and immigration facilities, and the development of a fully equipped beach area.
He further requested that any issues arising during the implementation of the project be discussed through the committee, and that alternative proposals be submitted where necessary to address concerns of affected parties.
Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Ghanaka Hemachandra, stated that the proposed breakwater would support the activities of the fisheries harbour and that an urban zone is planned to be developed around the port area.
