The government has given special priority to providing electricity to nearly 1,000 families in the Vavuniya District who are still without access to electricity.
A special District Coordinating Committee meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister of Energy Arkam Ilyas, was recently held to discuss solutions to electricity-related issues in the district.
The meeting reviewed the progress of the electrification programme, with officials revealing that more than 200 families have already been connected to the national grid this year. Discussions were also held with officials of Electricity Distribution Lanka Ltd. on expediting electricity connections for the remaining households.
The meeting further focused on securing funds to construct new electricity distribution lines along 15 roads, providing financial assistance to low-income families to obtain electricity connections, installing 32 high-capacity transformers across the district to improve the power supply, and restoring the electricity distribution network near the Kunjukkulam Bridge, which was damaged during the Cyclone Ditwah disaster.
