The newly constructed Kegalle Depot Complex, developed as part of the island-wide development programme to strengthen Sri Lanka’s public transport sector, was officially opened to the public yesterday (13).
Constructed at a cost of Rs. 835 million, the new complex includes the Sabaragamuwa Regional Office of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), SLTB Driver Training College, Kegalle Branch of the National Transport Medical Institute, an auditorium, operations division, staff rest area, accounts office and other administrative facilities.
The complex also features a spacious canteen, a large parking area capable of accommodating a greater number of buses, a fuel station for SLTB buses and a modern workshop equipped with facilities and machinery for bus repairs.
The new facility marks another significant milestone in the SLTB’s efforts to improve public transport services, with its vision of becoming an “excellent provider of passenger transport.”
The opening ceremony was attended by Kegalle District Parliamentarian Roshan Kanchana Welipitiya, Kegalle Municipal Council Mayor Nimal Karunaratne, Kegalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sarath Ranasinghe, government officials, local authority members, SLTB officials, representatives of state institutions and private sector organisations, and a large number of other invitees.
