More than 100 revenue-generating development projects worth Rs. 2.5 billion are scheduled to commence today (14) across local government institutions islandwide under the “Punarudaya Purawara” National Programme.
The main launch ceremony will be held in Madurankuliya, Puttalam, under the patronage of Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Prof. Chandana Abeyratne. Another ceremony will be held in Angunakolapelessa, Hambantota, under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath.
The projects aim to improve the living standards of local communities while strengthening the financial independence of local government institutions by creating new sources of revenue and improving existing income-generating activities.
The Government has allocated Rs. 2.5 billion in performance-based capital grants for revenue-generating projects through the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government in the 2026 Budget.
The approved projects include commercial complexes, gyms, drinking water schemes, agricultural projects, rice-drying centres, tourism facilities, solar power systems, preschools and children’s parks, food production and processing centres, restaurants, crematoriums, tourist bungalows, auditoriums, parking facilities, electric vehicle charging stations and vehicle service centres.
The projects were selected following feasibility assessments based on the revenue capacity and past performance of each local government institution, as well as its ability to recover the investment within five years.
