President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has extended his greetings to Muslims in Sri Lanka and around the world on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
In his message, the President said the occasion should go beyond a mere celebration and serve as an opportunity for profound spiritual transformation, with sacrifice at its forefront and the creation of a society founded on equality as its goal. The President described the Holy Prophet Muhammad as one of the greatest teachers to have guided humanity, emphasizing his teachings of patience, compassion, peace, brotherhood, purity, trustworthiness and justice.
He noted that the hardships endured and sacrifices made by the Prophet over 23 years were aimed at building a virtuous society. The President also highlighted the Prophet’s rejection of discrimination based on race, caste, colour or social status, emphasizing the teaching that all humanity originates from a single source and that true greatness is measured through values such as truthfulness, tolerance and compassion.
According to the President, the Prophet’s efforts to reduce social disparities and protect the rights of the oppressed established fundamental principles of social justice and equality. He said these teachings provide valuable guidance for Sri Lanka’s aspiration to build a country governed by the rule of law, justice and equal treatment, and a society based on coexistence and harmony.
The President further emphasized that Islam rejects forms of vice that undermine individual morality and the moral fabric of society. In this context, he said the teachings and example of the Holy Prophet provide strength to programmes aimed at strengthening social values, including the Government’s national campaign against illicit drugs.
Expressing his belief that Sri Lanka is moving towards an era in which love will be valued over hatred and brotherhood over division, President Dissanayake said the light of the Prophet’s sacrifice and humanity should guide the country’s journey towards a better society.
He invited everyone to give true meaning to the life, example, dedication and noble endeavours of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The President extended his wishes for a meaningful Milad-un-Nabi celebration to all Muslim devotees in Sri Lanka and around the world.
