Sri Lanka has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which establishes an immediate ceasefire between the two countries.
In a statement, Sri Lanka said the ceasefire marks a significant step towards de-escalation and long-term regional and global stability. The agreement is also expected to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and provide a framework for the continuation of diplomatic negotiations.
Sri Lanka reaffirmed its strong support for the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy and expressed optimism that the agreement would contribute to sustainable peace across the region.
The Government of Sri Lanka also extended its sincere appreciation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the State of Qatar for their pivotal roles as mediators, as well as to all partners whose support was instrumental in achieving this diplomatic outcome.
