CAA warns of legal action over wheat flour prices

    January 08, 2016

Refuting reports that the price of wheat flour has been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said that legal action will be taken against companies which have increased prices without prior approval.

Under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, the maximum retail price of Wheat Flour (unpacketted) has been set at Rs 87 per kilogram.

Issuing a statement, the CAA said despite this fact incorrect information has circulated among the public through various media claiming that the price of wheat flour has been increased by Rs 2 with effect from January 05, 2016.

“If the price of wheat flour has been increased without prior approval of the Consumer Affairs Authority, legal action would be instigated against respective companies following a special inspection while legal action will also be taken against traders who sell wheat flour above the existing control price,” CAA Chairman Hasitha Tillekeratne said.
