Independence Day Message by the Mahanayake Thero of Asgiri Chapter

    February 04, 2016

Ven. Galagama Dhammasiddhi Sri Dhammananda Aththadassi, Mahanayake Thero of the Syamopali Maha Nikaya of the Mahavihara Ancestry and the Chief Incumbent of Asgiri Vijayasundararamaya, historic Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya and Rangiri Dambulla Temple in his message to mark Sri Lanka's 68th Independence Day said, "It’s being 68 years since our country had gained the independence from the English empire. Within that period various governments have ruled the country and a considerable development has been made in the country with some improvements as well as declines in the national, religious and cultural fields. All these are based on the freedom enjoyed by the public of the country.

"Lord Buddha had praised not only the freedom of the humans but of the whole animal kingdom. He explained to take one’s self as an example and to affirm the freedom that is expected by other beings. Accordingly, as we like to live, worship our religion, engage in political activities, and to maintain our life freely, we should affirm the others’ will of enjoying the same feelings. This does not mean a freedom beyond the limits. The need to act within the orthodoxy should be emphasized.

"There are many things to be achieved on this occasion of the completion of 68 years to our country’s independence. My expectation is that all Sri Lankans will unite on achieving the goals of unitary status, sovereignty of the country as well as in building a moral, virtuous life. I commemorate all laic and ascetic heroes who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country’s independence and taking them as exemplars I wish everyone the strength and courage to commit on behalf of the future generation of our country."
