    Independence Day celebrated in Sweden

    The 68th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was conducted on Feb.4 at the Embassy premises in the presence of a large gathering of Diplomatic community and Senior Officials representing the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden.

    The Ambassador Mrs. Damayanthie Rajapakse hoisted the National Flag and delivered a speech at the inauguration of the ceremony elaborating Sri Lanka Government’s commitment to embark on post conflict reconciliation process and plans for economic development. Strengthening relations between Sri Lanka and Sweden was emphasized as well.

     

    On the 6th February 2016, the Independence celebrations were conducted at Allaktivitetshuset, Sturegatan 10, Sundbyberg with the participation of Sri Lankans living in Sweden.

     

    Religious observances were conducted by the Buddhist, Hindu and Christian clergy bestowing blessings upon Sri Lanka for the country’s prosperity and good governance. The officials of the Embassy read out the Independence Day messages of the President Maithripala Sirisena,Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Mangala Samaraweera.

     

    On this day, a Cultural Show organized by the Mission to coincide with the independence celebrations was adorned by a group of Sri Lankan children and adults residing in Stockholm with the rendition of patriotic songs and presentation of Sri Lankan dance forms captivating the audience present on the occasion.

     

    At both the events, two minutes silence was observed in honour of National Heroes and the National Anthem of Sri Lanka was sung in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

     

    Sri Lankan traditional cuisine, complemented with Sri Lankan sweet treats and Ceylon tea were served to the invitees at the conclusion of these ceremonies conducted by the Embassy.
