Alarming rise in rats in Colombo

    March 07, 2016

The rat population in Colombo has gone up at an alarming rate. An increase in diseases such as rat fever, plague, etc is also reported, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) said.

According to the CMC, it has already implemented a special programme to control pests. The public can obtain information on rat control free of charge by dialing 0112503550.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry sources said over 40 persons died of rat fever (leptospirosis) last year.

Farmers, persons cleaning drains, persons working in mines, marshy lands and canals and persons who swim or play in contaminated water should contact the PHI or MOH office and obtain Doxycycline tablets provided free of charge.

They should take two tablets before starting work. They should also drink water while working. The tablets provide around 90 percent protection for a week.

The main symptoms of rat fever are high fever, mild flu, chills, conjunctival suffusion, muscle tenderness (notable in calf and lumber areas), intense headache and decrease in passing urine.
