    June 09, 2016

Government has received approval from the Cabinet of Ministers to pay compensation to over 2,000 families affected by the Moragahakanda - Kalu Ganga Development Project.

Moragahakanda - Kalu Ganga Irrigation project, the biggest multi-functional irrigation project, currently undergoing constructions, was inaugurated in January 2007, when President Sirisena was the Irrigation and Mahaweli Development Minister.

The projects have been identified as important projects that help in providing water for agricultural activities in the North Central Province and providing drinking water for people in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, and Matale Districts.

When completed the project will provide irrigation facilities to 81,422 hectares in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, provide potable and industrial water supply to Anuradhapura and Trincomalee towns and generate electricity by hydropower while opening up 5000 hectares of new land for agriculture development in Northern, North Central, Eastern and North Western provinces.

The Project will generate 25MW hydro-power to the national grid. Increasing inland fish production, provision of potable and industrial water requirements, Eco tourism and effective flood control are the other targets of the project.

Almost 65 percent of the project has been completed and it is planned to fill water in the reservoir before the rain starts in Maha season 2016.

Therefore, 2,512 affected families in Navula and Laggala-Pallegama Divisional Secretary Divisions due to the land acquisition should be evacuated immediately. Already 984 families have been granted compensation, while 2,228 families remain to be evacuated.

the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal made by the President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to grant compensations for the rest 2,228 families in order to evacuate them immediately, so as to complete the project within the due time period.
