Lithuanian support for flood and landslides victims

    June 23, 2016

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has allocated Euro 10,000 in humanitarian aid to help victims of extreme weather events in Sri Lanka.

The funds will be channelled through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to people affected by a tropical cyclone in Sri Lanka.

"Thus Lithuania contributes to the international effort to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to victims of natural disasters," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania confirmed.

On 15 May 2016 Sri Lanka was hit by the severe tropical storm that caused widespread landslides and the worst flooding in 25 years. More than 300,000 people have been affected by this disaster, many remain displaced from their homes.

The Baltic state has also allocated Euro 10,000 in aid for Malawi where a strong El Nino and abnormal rainfall patterns between 2014 and 2015 had contributed to a spike in food insecurity, leading to a real threat of a famine in Malawi where 2.9 million people were food insecure.
