    Poppy flower campaign launched

    Launching the poppy flower campaign, the first poppy flower was presented to the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne yesterday (4th Aug.) at the Naval Headquarters by the President of Sri Lanka Naval Association, Captain (Rtd) D.A. Wijegunawardena.

    The crimson color of the poppy flower signifies the bloodshed of the war heroes in the battlefield and is a symbol of remembrance.

     

    The Poppy flower campaign was originally adopted to honor the war heroes who sacrificed their lives during World War I.Today it is used to signify the supreme sacrifices made by the heroic military personnel for the protection of the Motherland.

     

    The funds collected from poppy sales are channeled for the welfare of their dependents as a tribute.
