Recently Minister of Rural Industries P.Harrison visited the Ridiyagama farm on an observation tour to see about the present liquid milk production.
Around 2000 calves born to the imported cows are at the farm. The minister instructed the Chairman National Livestock Development Board Prof. H.W.Cyril to distribute the calves’ among the farms owned by the National Livestock Development Board.
The Ridiyagama farm is equipped with the latest machinery for liquid milk production. At present the farm produces about 30,000 liters of milk daily while discussions were held to increase the milk production capacity.
According to plans 40% of the liquid milk production requirement will be fulfilled by National Livestock Development Board.
The minister said that by next year the government with the support and cooperation of India and Pakistan are planning to import cows suitable for the dry zone.
