    Other Field Crops cultivation reach 50-pct of its target Featured

    The cultivation target of all Other Field Crops (OFCs) is 96,627ha and the progress as at end June 2015 is 48,716ha; 50% of the target, the Socio Economic and Planning Centre of Peradeniya Agirculture Department revealed releasing the Crop Forecast for Yala 2015.

     

    According to the Crop Forecast, the cultivated extends of other field crops up to end June 2015 in Yala 2015 are as follows:

     

     Maize : The cultivated extent of maize is 7,373ha. Production is available from July to September especially in Badulla district.

     

    • Pulses: A remarkable rise in soy been cultivation is reported compared to Yala 2014 season and the expected production is 119% higher than the previous Yala season. Mahaweli system H contributes 91% of soya production and harvest is available in August.

     

    • Green gram, black gram and cow pea production is 33%, 27% and 5 % behind the production of Yala 2014 season respectively.

     

    • Condiments: when compared to the Yala 2014 production, the expected production of red onion and chilli is higher and big onion is lower.

     

    • Oil Crops: The expected production of gingelly and ground nut is comparable with the production of Yala 2014.

     

    • Millets: Expected production of finger millet is 63% of the production of Yala 2014.

     

    • Potato: The cultivation progress of potato as at end June 2015 is 528ha and it is further increasing.
