Government extended condolences yesterday (April 19) to the family members of those killed in the devastating earthquake in Ecuador.

"The Government and people of Sri Lanka are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of many lives caused by the sudden earthquake in Ecuador on 17th April," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

"The Government conveys heartfelt and profound condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives."

The 7.8 on Richter scale quake, which struck Saturday night, has killed at least 413 people, officials said Monday. More than 2,500 more were injured.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Government and people of Ecuador, including the families of victims who grieve over this terrible tragedy, and those injured," the government said.
