69th International Police Association World Congress Begins in Sri Lanka

The 69th World Congress of the International Police Association (IPA) commenced today (21) at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath attending as the Chief Guest.

Held from October 20 to 25, 2026, the Congress brings together more than 400 delegates representing 69 countries. This marks the first time an IPA World Congress is being held in an Asian country.

With more than 600,000 members worldwide, the IPA is a non-governmental organisation that promotes social, cultural and professional friendship among serving and retired police officers. Under its motto, “Servo per Amikeco” (“Service Through Friendship”), the Association works to strengthen international cooperation and mutual understanding.

Martin Hoffmann serves as the current World President of the IPA, while Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, heads the Sri Lanka Section.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Vijitha Herath welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka. He emphasised the importance of international cooperation in tackling cross-border crime, organised criminal networks and emerging law enforcement challenges. He also invited the delegates to experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, hospitality and local traditions during their stay.

The IPA Friendship Week will follow the Congress from October 25 to 31, featuring a tour programme across Sri Lanka. The programme will offer delegates opportunities to explore the country’s cultural heritage, ancient cities, historical sites, natural landscapes, cuisine and traditions.
