Construction of a new double-track railway bridge at Maggona officially commenced yesterday (Aug. 31) under the Coastal Railway Line Rehabilitation Project.
The project, costing Rs. 401.03 million, is being funded by the government and implemented by R.R. Construction under the supervision of Sri Lanka Railways. Construction is expected to be completed within one year.
The new 26-metre-long and 10.5-metre-wide concrete bridge will be built parallel to the existing steel bridge, which was damaged during the 2004 tsunami and has since been in an unsafe condition.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunesena said 12 more bridges along the Coastal Railway Line will be rehabilitated within the next year, while steps will also be taken to improve the railway line and restore prescribed train speeds.
