The Government’s programme to construct 55 student hostels at state universities across the country commenced with the laying of the foundation stone for a new hostel at the University of Vavuniya yesterday (22).
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the Government’s main objective is to create a more conducive and enriching environment for students within universities.
The new four-storey hostel at the University of Vavuniya will provide accommodation for around 200 students, with an investment of over Rs. 231 million.
The University of Vavuniya has been allocated four hostel projects under the programme, which is expected to provide accommodation facilities for around 16,000 students across the country.
The Prime Minister said priority has been given to newly established universities and universities located outside major urban areas. She also stressed the need to complete the projects on time and ensure the proper maintenance of the facilities.
She emphasized that universities play a vital role in developing the country’s future leadership and that students should be provided with quality education, proper infrastructure and a supportive university environment.
