Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa says the government is working to reduce fuel prices while managing the current situation, and will provide relief to the public at the earliest possible opportunity.
Speaking at a Cabinet decisions media briefing today (1), the Minister said it was not possible to reduce the prices of all fuel types, including kerosene, petrol and diesel, at once. However, the government could consider a further fuel price reduction next month.
He said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has pushed up global prices of goods and services, while higher shipping costs and order cancellations have also contributed to rising fuel prices.
The government expects the prices of goods and services to decrease correspondingly when fuel prices are reduced, he added.
Meanwhile, the QR-code system for fuel distribution remains in operation. If a filling station fails to provide fuel according to the QR system, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will intervene and take necessary action.
The Minister also said arrangements are in place through Divisional Secretariats to resolve issues related to QR codes, while complaints regarding fuel stations are being promptly referred to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.
He further stated that no industry or construction site has had to shut down due to the current fuel situation.
