The government aims to transform Ratnapura into a major global gem hub by adding value not only to locally sourced gems but also to imported gems for export to international markets, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunneththi said.
Speaking at the opening of “Gem City Ratnapura 2026” international gem exhibition in Palmadulla yesterday , the Minister said the government expects to generate US$2 billion annually in export revenue through value-added gem and jewellery products.
He said measures would be taken to strengthen environmental protection, increase women’s participation in the industry, eliminate child labour, ensure transparency and improve the competitiveness of Sri Lankan gems in international markets.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath said the government would use Sri Lankan diplomatic missions overseas to expand international markets for Sri Lankan gems, including sapphires.
Organised jointly by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) and the Lanka Gem and Jewellery Dealers and Miners Association (LGDMA), the three-day exhibition has attracted international investors and buyers from countries including the United States, China, Japan, Thailand, India and Spain.
The exhibition also aims to provide small and medium-scale entrepreneurs with direct access to international markets and further strengthen Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry.
