Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) has recorded its highest-ever passenger traffic in 2025, handling 140,614 passengers, the Airport and Aviation Services Company announced. This is the highest number of passenger movements since the airport was inaugurated in 2013.
The airport also successfully handled 703 international flights during the year, reflecting steady growth over the past three years. Officials attribute this achievement to the special focus and corrective measures introduced by the new government, particularly in addressing long-standing operational and safety concerns.
Airlines that were previously hesitant to operate at Mattala due to wildlife-related safety issues have resumed or launched services following improved conditions. In 2025, several international airlines began operations connecting Europe, the Middle East and South Asia, including Red Wings, SkyUp, Fly One, Centrum Air, Uzbekistan Airways and Bulgaria Air. Belavia Airlines of Belarus is also set to commence flights to Mattala for the first time this year.
With its proximity to key tourist destinations and its strategic role in easing congestion at Bandaranaike International Airport, MRIA is expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s tourism and national economy.
