A discussion was recently held under the leadership of Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Mr. Bimal Ratnayake, to address the potential impact of the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan on Sri Lanka’s ports and airports.
The meeting focused on preparing for possible global political developments and ensuring uninterrupted operations at the country’s key transport hubs.
The Minister noted an increase in requests for additional ship arrivals at Sri Lankan ports due to the Indo-Pakistan crisis. Discussions included strategies to accommodate these demands without disrupting existing operations, highlighting the need for efficiency and readiness.
Minister Ratnayake stressed the importance of keeping both ports and airports in a constant state of preparedness to adapt swiftly to global events. He emphasized that these institutions must be run efficiently, leveraging emerging opportunities even amid geopolitical tensions.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Ports Authority, airport and terminal officers from Colombo and Hambantota, shipping company representatives, and customs officials.
