Minister Senarathna made these remarks attending the Annual Sessions of the Food and Drug Inspectors Association. He said that they expected more opposition when the decision was taken to control the price of drugs. We kept adequate stocks of drugs and started the price control. Our country imports Rs 60 billion worth of drugs and of this Rs 30 billion worth of drugs are imported by the government. After the price reduction the Health Ministry has been able to save Rs.six million.
When the price of drugs was reduced the companies said that they will have to close down but the marketing officers supported us. Minister Senarathna assured that he will take steps to further reduce the price of drugs and surgical equipment.
Minister Senarathna said that by controlling the price of drugs the government has been able to minimize drugs coming to the country illegally.
He said that steps will be taken soon to fill the vacancies in the category of food and drug inspectors as there is only a limited number at present.
Minister said that the price of eye lenses will be reduced by Rs 20,000 next week. He said that he has information of doctors who are importing and selling eye lenses. When eye lenses are imported the Sri Lanka Customs taxes are charged based on the weight. Therefore the importers enjoy a big profit said the Minister.
The Food and Drug Inspectors Association presented a memento to Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratna for his untiring efforts to reduce the price of 48 essential drugs.
Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Gayantha Karunathilaka, Additional Director Hemantha Benaragama and Chairman Food and Drug Inspectors Association Amith Perera also participated.
