    Northern fishermen benefit from Coast Guard awareness program

    Coast Guard personnel attached to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Northern Region recently conducted an awareness program for fishermen at Point Pedro.

    According to sources, the awareness program was held for fisherfolk in Kottadi, Point Pedro. The program was conducted to educate fishermen on duties of Coast Guard, importance of life saving equipment, first aid, basic safety measures to follow when sailing, importance of fishermen's profession and their contribution to the country.

     

    Fishermen in Kottadi who attended the program responded positively and showed much interest, the sources said. They were also educated on fishing monitoring duties conducted by the Coast Guard from Point Pedro to Thondamannar.

     

    Jaffna District Assistant Director of Fisheries N Ganesh Moorthi and over 30 local fishermen participated.

     

    Meanwhile, SLCG lifeguards were briefed by Australian life saving experts.

     

    A refresher program was conducted by officials from the Life Saving Victoria (LSV) Australia for the Coast Guard Bronze Medallion Life Guards.

     

    The Australian trainers have been instrumental in imparting latest lifesaving techniques and advanced methods to Coast Guard lifeguards during the training session.

     

    Twenty two Coast Guard Bronze medallions participated at the refresher program. They were trained by officials from Life Saving Victoria.
