    President discusses solutions to Mahaweli Zone people's problems

    President Maithripala Sirisena instructed officials to find immediate solutions to the problems faced by people live in Mahaweli zones.

    Today, people who live in these areas faced many difficulties when fulfilling their basic needs and has many issues related to health and education fields too. The President also instructed the relevant officials to implement a special program to develop the infrastructure facilities of the Mahaweli zones.

     

    The President made these remarks at the Progress Review Meeting of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development held at the Mahaweli Authority, yesterday (17).

     

    Subsequent, to participating in the duty assumption ceremony of Anuradha Jayaratne as the Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment at the Ministry, the President held the Progress Review Meeting.

     

    The officials discussed in detail the future plans of the Mahaweli Authority for the next three years and about the 2020 Mahaweli Vision.

     

    The President also reviewed the progress of the Mahaweli Joint Development Project, Welioya Joint Development Project as well as the Rideemaliyadda Development Project.

     

    The President also inquired about the progress of implementing the decisions he took with regard to the farmer community when he visited Welioya last month.

     

    He also inquired about the progress of the development works in Medirigiriya area.

     

    During the discussion, the attention was drawn to the production goals of the farmer community in the Mahaweli zones under the national program for local food production.

     

    President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the officials to conduct all the environmental conservation programs in collaboration with the Central Environment Authority.

     

    Special attention of the President was drawn to the matters relating to the water management and maintenance in the area.

     

    The President also paid his attention to the issues in the paddy purchasing process and instructed the relevant officials to find immediate solutions to this issue and to the issue of storage problems of paddy.

     

    The Government has taken steps to hold a competition to select Best Farmer and the President ordered the officials to conduct the program through the Mahaweli Authority.

     

    The President also inquired into the progress of the construction works on the electric fence which will be constructed to avoid human elephant conflict. President Maithripala Sirisena gave directions to conduct a special program to eliminate the drug menace from the Mahaweli zones under the National Drugs Prevention Programme.

     

    Anuradha Jayaratne – Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Udaya Senavirathne- Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli and Environment, Anura Dissanayake- Director Genaral of Mahaweli Development Authority and other officials were also participated in the Progress Review Meeting.
