Under the national program "A Place of One's Own - A Beautiful Life" (Thaman-gema Thanak - Lassana Jeewithayak) implemented by the current government, island-wide initiatives are underway to construct houses for impoverished families who lack the financial capacity to build a home of their own.
The district-level commencement of a national program to officially hand over completed houses to the public began in October last year.
In line with this, the presentation of newly constructed houses to four low-income families living in the Pallama and Arachchikattuwa Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Puttalam District took place recently (18th). The ceremony was presided over by the Chairman of the Puttalam District Coordinating Committee and Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyratne.
Minister Abeyratne stated that completed houses among those currently being built at the regional level in the Puttalam District are being handed over to beneficiary families step-by-step. He further noted that other newly identified houses currently under construction are scheduled to be presented to the respective families before the end of this year.
Beneficiaries are identified as low-income, homeless family units selected by village-level committees, including Grama Niladharis, and recommended by the respective Divisional Secretaries.
The event was attended by the Chairman of the Anamaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Aloka Bandara; Vice Chairman Imalka Dilshan; Pradeshiya Sabha Member Sakun Manchanayake; Chairman of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Jayaratne Jayasekara; Pradeshiya Sabha Member Nilan Dhanushka; the Pallama Divisional Secretary; the Pallama OIC; and several other government officials.
