Cabinet approval for Committee to grant compensation to political victims

    January 04, 2020

The proposal made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to appoint Sumudu K. Wickramarachchi as the Secretary to the Committee chaired by Jagath Balapatambendi, appointed to investigate and report on political reprisals, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, Information and Communication Technology, Higher Education, Technology and Innovations and Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardana said.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department Auditorium in Colombo yesterday, Dr.Gunawardana said that all Cabinet ministers unanimously approved it. Within one week after the 2015 Government came into power, it started the process of politically victimizing employees in state owned institutions.
According to Minister Gunawardena, the 2015 Government sacked some employees by breaking the law and transferring them, prevented them from receiving due promotions, imprisoned them without granting bail and used every possible tactic to make them suffer purely due to their political affiliations.“We had to open a special Ombudsman’s Office at the Opposition Leader’s office in order to accept the large number of appeals and complaints from victims who were politically victimized by the 2015 Government. I was there in the office once a week to accept the complaints. A large number of employees came and made complaints before the Presidential Election 2019,” the Minister said.
“All complaints which were received by the Ombudsman’s Office which functioned from the Opposition Leader’s Office have already been forwarded to the relevant state Ministries and other relevant institutions for necessary action. The Committee will do justice to all complaints and will provide the best possible solution to each and every complaint,” Minister Dr.Gunawardana added
