Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed the National Fertilizer Secretariat to conduct scientific research on the chemical content of organic fertiliser made out of municipal waste.
Sri Lanka will soon commence a modified inflation targeting framework said Central Bank Governor Indrajit Coomaraswamy said.Speaking at the oration to mark the 68th anniversary of the Central Bank he said that this is expected to be implemented form 2019 April. He said that a legal frame work in this regard is now been prepared. The governor also said that the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) will enter the stock market soon.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that measures are being taken to reduce the loan burden to 70 per cent of the total state revenue by 2020.“The state revenue in 2013 was Rs. 1,137 billion while Rs.1,162 billion would have to be paid for loan installments and loan interest,” the Prime Minister said.“ We undertook an economy filled with loans,” he said.
Earnings from merchandise exports surpassed US dollars 1 billion for the second time during the year to US dollars 1,024 million in June 2018, mainly driven by industrial exports. Under industrial exports, earnings from textiles and garment exports increased significantly due to the higher demand from the EU and the USA while exports to nontraditional markets also increased.

The government has decided to provide an amount of Rs. 18,000 per hectare from the next Maha season to obtain organic fertilizer required to encourage farmers in organic agriculture. Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said that the previous governments had not paid much attention to the farmers who are engaged in the organic farming practice to provide food free of poisons to the people of this country.
