MPs voting for 19A will be part of history - Media Minister Featured

    April 28, 2015

The vote on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution will be taken up in Parliament at 6 pm today.

Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said the government is confident of securing a two thirds majority. He also added that those who vote against the Bill will be discarded to the dustbin of history at the next general election.

He also said it seems that about 30 to 40 members would vote against the Bill. He said that those members voting against the Bill shows the rift in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Minister Karunathilake further said that Members of Parliament will be a part of history by voting for this Bill as it reduces the powers of the Executive President.

"This has been a long felt need of the people for the past 37 years," he said.

The minister further said the government plans to incorporate the amendments proposed by the opposition at the Committee Stage of the 19th Amendment Bill.
