    Other Field Crops cultivation achieves 65-pct of target in Maha 2015/16 Featured

    The cultivation progress of all Other Field Crops (OFC) in Maha 2015/16 is 105,547ha; 65% of the target, the Peradeniya Agriculture Dept's Socio Economics and Planning Centre announced.

    The following figures shows that OFC cultivation progress is relatively lower than Maha 2014/15 season (except Maize) because of high rainfall availability within the previous months.

     

    - Maize : The cultivation progress is 67,650ha; 78% of the target and 11% above the cultivated extent of last Maha season.

     

    · Pulses: Green gram, Cow pea and Black gram :cultivation extents are 83%,69% and 63% from the cultivation extent of Maha 2014/15 respectively.

     

    · Condiments: Chilli cultivation progress is 55% from its target. Red onion cultivation progress is 45 from the cultivation extent of previous Maha season.

     

    · Oil Crops: Ground nut expected production is 16% higher than the previous Maha season and gingerly it is 70% lower.

     

    · Millets: Finger millet cultivation progress is 40% from cultivation extent of previous Maha season.

     

    · Potato: Cultivation extent of potato is 1620ha and it is further increasing.

     

    The cultivation progress of up country vegetables and low country vegetables are


    49% and 61% of their targets respectively, the Dept. said.

     

    According to statistics Pumpkin shows the highest cultivation extent followed by brinjal, mae, beans and okra.

     

    When compared with the total cultivation extent of Maha 2014/15 season, up country vegetables and low country vegetables cultivation progress up to end December reached 51% and 63% progress respectively, the Dept. further added..
