    Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to honour founder Minister

    A section of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage will be named after founder Minister P. B. G. Kalugalle, Sustainable Development and Wildlife Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said at the 41st anniversary celebrations of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, recently.

    The Minister said the setting up of Elephant Orphanage was an act of great foresight. He said that in addition to homing and taking care of elephants, the orphanage had evolved into an attraction for tourists. He said that therefore, minister Kalugalle who conceptualised and made reality the project should be honoured.

     

    He said he intended to have discussions with the President regarding the matter.

     

    A highlight of the ceremony was the feeding of 'kiribath' to several elephants at the orphanage, in particular the more well known 'Abhaya', 'Menike' and 'Dinuda', together with guests.

     

    Deputy Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena, State Minister A. D. Champika Premadasa and Parliamentarians Ajith Mannamperuma and Sandith Samarasinhe were also present on the occasion.
