Work on First phase of Northern Expressway begins tomorrow

The Government has already drawn up plans to accelerate the work on the Northern Expressway Project. The Northern Expressway Project is one of the main development Schemes that was identified under the 2007 – 2018 National Highways Plan and work on the Northern Expressway will be launched tommorow (14) under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The main purpose of this Expressway Project is to minimize traffic congestion within the main towns and pave the way for the people to enjoy an efficient transport service. A notable feature is that the Northern Expressway is being constructed with an access road to Kandy.

Initially the Expressway will have four lanes and it is planned to increase it to six lanes depending on the requirements.

The Government’s intention is to complete the work on the Project within four years.

As an initial step the foundation will be laid at Galagedara as the first interchange of the Expressway. Minister Rambukwella said and the ceremony in this respect will be held on Friday the 14 at 9.30 a.m. under the patronage of the President. (ST/KH)
