I would be a traitor to the country if I support Maithripala - Tissa Attanayake

    December 10, 2014

Tissa Attanayake, Member of Parliament who joined the government from the UNP said that he cannot agree with the decision of the UNP because they would not achieve what they expect.   In particular, the decision to assist Maithripala to win the Presidential Election as it will not be of any benefit to the country.  The clauses in the agreement that the Opposition had made with different parties are contrary to each other and will result in political instability.

These views were expressed by Tissa Attanayake at a press conference called by the UPFA at the ‘Ape Gama’ premises in Battaramulla on Tuesday (09).

When we decided to name Maithripala as the Common Candidate, he stated that he will bring in 25 government members with him.  He also stated when he becomes the President he would give executive Prime Ministerial powers to Ranil Wickremasinghe within 24 hours.  Also that he would appoint commissions to abolish the Executive Presidential system within 100 days.  It is unbelievable that this can be achieved.  Their bankruptcy was seen on Monday (08). The decision of the UNP to put forward Maithripala Sirisena as a Presidential candidate had been severely opposed.  Also decisions taken by the Leader of the Opposition will not be practical.

At this Press Conference he further stated that the opposition is now being manipulated by other parties, at a time the UNP is left rudderless.  He added that this is a sad state of affairs as decisions taken by the party are contrary to party principles whereby members of the party are being penalized.

I joined the government because I cannot agree with the decisions taken by the UNP on behalf of the country. (NJ/KH)
