'An opportune moment to promote good values' - Opposition Leader

The Maha Shivarathri festival is an occasion to pay homage to God Shiva. Conducting pooja, prayers and singing of devotional songs and lighting of lamps, conducting a fast at kovils keeping awake the whole night helps to create a major transformation in life according to the belief of Hindus, states Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva in a message to mark Maha Shivarathri Day.

The message added that this festival gains special significance because Hindus believed that God Shiva's Tandava Act occurred on this day.

The Maha Shivarathri Festival becomes more meaningful because Hindus have lived in unity, friendship with all people eschewing petty differences safeguarding human dignity and equality cultivating of spiritual values is an opportune moment to promote good values in society. Building of a society with love and compassion in place of enmity and hatred should be the deserve of all. We should build a society which develops and strengthens the weak instead of rising against him. This could be accompanied only with dedication and determination.

The Maha Shivarathri festival inspires us towards such a society with ample examples.
