    Japan supports rehabilitation of Education facilities in Mannar

    The Government of Japan will extend a financial contribution amounting to 550 million Japanese Yen (approximately US$ 4.2 million) through UNHABITAT for “The Project for Sustainable Resettlement through Community-driven Improvement of the Learning Environment in Mannar District.
    The project aims to contribute to the sustainable rehabilitation and reconstruction of conflict affected people in Mannar district in the Northern Province through assisting people to overcome the hardships caused by lack of access to basic education services. Under this project, 15 primary and secondary schools will be built in 5 Divisional Secretariat divisions in the district and training programmes will be held for capacity building of teachers so as to improve the quality of the education service.

    The Government of Japan has a keen interest in supporting the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war affected Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka and recognizes the importance of developing small infrastructure including schools as an integral part of overall development in the region. Furthermore,in support of the development initiatives of the Government of Sri Lanka, Japan provided US$ 3.6 million for “the project for rehabilitating community infrastructures” and US$   3.7 million for “the project for rehabilitation of infrastructure, livelihood and women empowerment” in Northern and Eastern Province Lanka through UNHABITAT in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

    The current project has been designed utilizing the expertise of the Ministry of Educations and will focus not only on construction of school buildings but also on disaster risk reduction and improved accessibility for students with disabilities. Japan hopes that improving access to good quality education will enable children to lead for a better life in the future.
