    Prices of food items to be reduced ahead of festive season

    The Cost of Living Committee today decided to reduce the prices of many essential food items needed for the upcoming festive season. The Chairman of the Cost of Living Committee Minister. P. Harrison said the measure was taken to alleviate the burden on the people during holidays. Accordingly, the import levy on a kilo of imported dried chilies has been reduced from Rs. 25 to Rs. 5, while the tax on one kilogram of imported fish was reduced by Rs 75.


    Steps were also taken to control the prevailing prices of chicken and eggs. Accordingly, approval has been received to import chicken and eggs. Meanwhile, around 48,000 metric tons of paddy stocks in state-owned warehouses will be milled by small and medium scale rice milllers and sold to consumers through the Lanka Sathosa network. It has been decided to sell one kilo of nadu rice at Rs. 80 and a kilo of samba at Rs. 85.
