India's Civil Aviation Ministry today has said that there is no proposal under consideration for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to buy a controlling stake in Sri Lanka's Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota.
Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorale directed to disband the Welikada Prison’s Intelligence Unit with immediate effect. The Ministry in a press release said the decision was taken after investigations conducted over allegations into corruption and irregularities in the Prisons Department.
The Bribery Commission (BC) yesterday (25th) said it has been mandated by the Cabinet to draft a fresh Bribery Act and that it would seek recommendations of the Jakarta Principles when drafting it. Issuing a statement over the Global Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the Jakarta Principles, the BC said the new Act drafting process will benefit immensely from enhanced clarity, international best practices, and comparative experiences regarding the most important of recommendations contained in the Jakarta Principles.
Co-cabinet spokesperson, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said the Government would forge ahead with the death penalty directive given by President Maithripala Sirisena even if it leads to the loss of GSP Plus.He was responding to criticism levelled by the European Union and other countries over the Government’s decision to enforce the death penalty for drug traffickers.

SLNS Nandimithra, the Fast Missile Vessel attached to Southern Naval Command promptly transferred a severely injured Russian crew member who was onboard MV Boston, a Bulk Carrier belonging to Marshall Island, ashore for treatment.
This crew member had got one of his legs severely injured due to an accident onboard MV Boston which were on her passage from Guinea to Singapore.
On receipt of the information released by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre about the patient, the naval vessel was dispatched from Galle harbour to the location146 nautical miles off Galle light house. Accordingly, the patient was safely transferred to the Galle harbour and admitted to Teaching Hospital-Karapitiya for medical treatment.

The meeting entailed discussion on Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable development and cooperation with the GGGI to mobilise climate finance for climate resilient projects. During discussions, Secretary Dissanayake handed over a personal communication from President Maithripala Sirisena to Dr. Ban Ki-moon who conveyed his compliments to President Sirisena through Secretary Dissanayake and looked forward to closer cooperation between Sri Lanka and the GGGI in the future. He also commended President Sirisena’s Blue Green Development Strategy for Sri Lanka which encourages low emission sustainable development.
Present government will implement a huge development program in the Mullativ District under the ‘Gamperaliya’ rural development program. According to the Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera, the government has allocated Rs. 1.2 billion for the district for the next five months of this year.
